The Polecat Classic began in the summer of 2018 as a simple gathering of friends looking to enjoy a round of disc golf with a unique twist. What started as a casual afternoon game quickly evolved into an annual tradition, complete with a dress code, a post-tournament cookout, and an awards ceremony. From the very beginning, we introduced our own set of rule variations to put a fresh spin on the game, making the event as much about fun and camaraderie as competition.
Over the years, the Polecat Classic has grown from a small group of 10 to 12 participants to an event hosting up to 30 players. Despite this growth, we’ve remained committed to keeping the tournament an intimate and welcoming experience. Every summer, we return to the same 18-hole course at Wingfoot Lake State Park, where friends—old and new—come together to reconnect, compete, and celebrate the sport we love.
As the event has evolved, so have our traditions. The Lumberjack Award, introduced in the second year, honors the player who hits the most trees, with the trophy always crafted from wood in some way. Signature phrases like "You hate to see it" (for those unfortunate misfires) and "That's how you win the Polecat" (for moments of brilliance) have become part of our tournament culture. The dress code, once a simple requirement for formal attire, has transformed into a full-fledged costume contest, where the most extravagant outfit takes home the Best Dressed prize.
With the addition of new players of all skill levels, two divisions were introduced in 2024 (Year 7) to ensure fair and enjoyable competition:
The Polecat Classic – Designed for casual players, keeping the original spirit of fun and friendly competition. Winners take home the classic 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place cat-topped trophies.
The Polecat Pro Series – Created for those seeking a greater challenge, this division offers a more competitive experience, with the champion receiving a custom gold-plated championship ring.
Regardless of division, every participant is eligible for the coveted Lumberjack Award.
Now heading into our eighth tournament in 2025, the Polecat Classic remains true to its roots—a day of disc golf, friendly competition, and great company. While we continue to welcome new faces, our goal has always been the same: to create a fun, memorable experience that brings people together year after year.
